Give a warning or don't allow an appointment for a date that has already passed

Is there a way to not allow an appointment to be scheduled for a date that has already passed. Human error, but there have been times where a staff member looks up a date and by mistake it is in the wrong year and schedules an appointment. We've caught it every time, but is there a way to "lock" the days that have passed so that nothing can be added or cancelled?
